The Centre for the Study of Historic Houses and Estates, in NUI Maynooth will host a number of conferences, workshops and seminars designed to coincide with the various commemorative events to take place in the years 2013 – 2023.

The momentous decade from 1913 - 1923 re-shaped the social, political, economic and cultural landscape of Europe. These changes had profound implications for country houses and landed estates throughout Ireland, Great Britain and the wider continent. Patterns of life that had been unchanged for centuries underwent great upheaval. The annual Maynooth conferences planned for 2014, 2016 and 2018 aim to explore numerous aspects of country house and landed estate life at this pan-European level.

The first of these conferences, The Country House and the Great War: The European Experience will be held on 8-10 May 2014. A Call for Papers has now been issued and can be viewed below. This conference will also be accompanied by a major exhibition on 'The Irish Country House and the Great War', to be hosted initially at NUI Maynooth, in collaboration with the University Library, and with plans for it to travel to various venues throughout the country thereafter.

The Centre welcomes communication from academics, scholars and interested parties on this topic.
